I mean, why does the US Post Office want a different name for Waimea on the Big Island (Kamuela)? I understand their policy is that two towns can't have the same name in one state, but that's why you have zip codes.
Why can't you have a Waimea on Kauai with a zip code of 96796, and another Waimea (BI) with a zip code of 96743?
It just seems needlessly confusing to some people.

The USPS policy of not using the same post office name for two towns in the same state predates the use of zip codes. Zip codes weren't widely used before 1963, so using "Kamuela" for the post office name of the "Waimea" on the Big Island was an acceptable solution at the time.

Because Kamuela was named before zip codes?

One of the best answers I've ever seen on this site! Thanks Jonah!
Didn't realize that zips weren't used until that date, thought it was way before that.

There is a Waimea on Kauai as well as on Oahu so they are everywhere. There are two Kailua's for that matter and I think we have two Ninoles on just this island. You'd think there'd be more names available although I'm sure there are a bazillion "First Avenues" on the planet.

Well, since the Hawaiian language only has 12 letters, names are limited
