OK Debby, I'm gonna throw another one at ya.

Stop in to the Hilo Palace Theatre - Palace Main Page - and see if Bob Alder will let you jam on the Morton theater pipe organ.

Just imagine - a whole orchestra right at your fingertips!

Oh, and for everyone saying EEEEWWWWWW a pipe organ, it's not the same as a classical or church organ. Completely different sound, including the toycounter - drums, cymbals, blocks, surf, wind, sirens, car horns, xylophones, marimbas, and even pianos played from the organ keyboard.

Take a listen to some of the rock and jazz played by Les Knoll steamrocks - YouTube on a (virtual) theater pipe organ.

I particularly liked his version of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.

And some of the stuff by furrypeanut - furrypeanut1 - YouTube - that's a teenager to keep track of.

And of course the Master, George Wright. Google him too. His music first got me interested in the theater organ.

During First Night in Honolulu they occasionally have folks playing music on the big church organs. Beatles music on church organs is really impressive!

You might consider signing up for the Blue Dragon's newsletter. A lot of local bands end up on their events list and there are often YouTube links in the announcements. Blue Dragon is a great venue for meeting musicians. (Looks like the Big Island Jazz & Blues Festival kicks off there tomorrow night.)

Thank you!!!!! I will sign up.

In the meantime, sweetie was able to get off the boat in Honolulu a couple of times over the weekend and found a couple of pianos to play...had a GREAT time...and learned there is a blues jam on Sunday nights in Honolulu. It's not B.I., but he's in Honolulu a lot and if he's there on a Sunday night, he'll be overjoyed.

He won't be docking on B.I. until Sunday, so looks like he's going to miss the festival. Oops, it's WAY far from Hilo Harbor, he wouldn't be able to get there at all as he only gets a couple of hours off the boat. But once we're moved, we can make the trip!

Much appreciated!

Default Kids and music

There is a 3-part documentary on HBO Family titled "The Music in Me: A Family Special" HBO Family: Programs: THE MUSIC IN ME: A FAMILY SPECIAL . In the second part (I think) there is a 11-year-old classical composer, Roy, from Brooklyn, NY who composed music for ukulele and cello. Quite a combination! And it sounds great. Some of those kids do a great job on blues and jazz too.

I love watching all 3 parts of this special - these kids are really great. I'd like to see more young people getting into music and sticking with it.

And I can't play anything worth a hoot compared to these kids.
