As a recent visitor to Hawaii, my opinion is Kona is a desert. The house we stayed at had drip emitters for each tree and shrub.

North Kona is indeed arid. The Waikoloa area is Hawaii Island's desert. It is basically warm (or hot in the summer) and dry nearly year-round, sunny, with comfortable evenings, clean water, short-and-tshirt-weather. It is a destination that many seek, including residents who enjoy living on The Gold Coast.
