I am landing in Kona and thought about renting a car and cruising the island and have a look around before deciding.
Do you have some advice?

If a good swimming beach and not as much rain is a concern you should also put Maui on your list of places to check out.

Thanks for the input, I have been to Maui, lived in Kauai and visited Oahu many times but I want to try BI, I am fascinated by its diversity and the the rents seem better.

If you are really concerned about the rain - I'd only commit to a shorter term rental to see if it bothers you or not - That way if it doesn't fit your taste it will be easy to move rather than committing a full year.

Do you recommend any good beaches around Hilo? I have lots of arthritis and the best thing is a swim in a warm ocean.

Not sure if you are addressing me? (DebbY?) because I've never even been to Seattle or any other part of PNW, so I'm confused about your statement...sorry, I haven't been to nor moved to Hilo yet (about 5 weeks out) and I'm not a beach goer anyway, other than kayaking or diving. Good luck to you and I agree with Viper, why don't you get a short term rental first before settling in? I know of a nice one in Hilo that my spouse has seen, send me a DM if you want more information.

[quote=Rosie Sophie;25010984 I would prefer to live in Hilo instead of Kona but for the rain. [/QUOTE]

Hello Sophie. I'm wondering why you are choosing Hilo side (cooler and more rain), rather than drier and warmer West (Kona) side, considering your arthritis. And, Kona has many very nice swimming beaches. If it is to have a wide selection of university courses, then Hilo does have that. Although, there is a small campus (classes) in West Hawaii (Kealakehua).

Good luck on your move.

Rosie Sophie, if you have arthritis, then you definitely want the Kona side where the air is warmer and drier. We live in between Kona and Hilo where we are warmer and drier than Hilo but not as warm and dry as Kona, and my arthritis bothers me most of the time. Hilo is a nice place, but not where I would live if I wanted nice warm beaches. There are a few rocky beaches in the Hilo area, but I don't think they meet your criteria.

Speaking of warm weather...my spouse finds Hilo to be incredibly cold. I had to express mail one of his jackets after his first visit there. Just this afternoon, I packed the box of warm clothing that I'm parcel-posting to my new home next week.

Although I know absolutely zilch about the Puna area so far as living conditions, someone told me that there is a natural hot spring there. You might find that to be delightful. Ahalanui Park

Debby's hot springs comment made me think of an alternate therapy ..... very cold sea water, for arthritis.

John Craven used to be at NELHA (Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority), I do not know if his facility is still there, and had a fountain that flowed with very cold sea water from the depths off shore. He claimed that many West Hawaii residents came there for cold sea water treatments for their arthritis.

"...consider the fact that Craven has also developed a system of applying cold water to certain points on his body and claims to have healed his arthritis."

Yup. Many find that warm water makes their arthritis feel better, but cold water reduces the joint inflammation that causes the stiffness and pain.

I think your plan to rent a car and experience different parts of the island for yourself is great.

That is very interesting and timely information, Cyber and Open!

I was in a car accident a couple of weeks ago (one less car to sell before moving... ) and I have a lot of pain and soreness in my muscles, and my physical therapy, as well as home treatment, is ice. It's amazingly soothing. I'd been sitting in a very hot jacuzzi and the physical therapist said NO NO NO, heat inflames the injuries!
