Since you live in Texas, you would need to save no less than $20,000.
$10,000 for moving expenses, lodging, meals, etc. including one car shipping
$10,000 for security deposit apt or house, car insurance, electric deposit, emergency, etc
I want to warn you about housing in Hawaii. It is more expensive than California.
For instance, 3 bedroom, 2 baths, one garage (that is in Kona, Big Island) would cost over $400,000.
Apartment costs over $1,000 a month plus over $200 electric bills eventhough you don't have a/c!
You'd be better save ALOT of money.
Oh and DO NOT SELL YOUR TRUCK because you can drive on a dirt road in Big Island where cars can't do that. For instance, if you want to go South Point off road, you can use your truck. There are tons of ROUGH dirt road to explore Big Island. I BEG you not to sell your truck. TAKE IT WITH YOU!

I'd say 400k for a 3 bed 2 bath isn't really that bad, compared to California price. Hell, here in Oregon I've seen 2 bed 1 bath tiny houses go for $300,000 in not the most picturesque neighborhoods. As for the truck, could always sell it and buy one on the island used. Would save on the shipping.

You're forgetting one thing. PROPERTY TAX is extremely HIGH..

I disagree with you about selling the truck and buy a used on in Hawaii. It is MUCH cheaper to ship your truck than buying a used one. Trust me.

According to a website for Hawaii county it is $5.55 per $1000 assessed value. Where I live, it is roughly $16 per $1000. Though yes, the housing is comparatively more expensive in Hawaii than where I live, the tax (rates) here are substantially higher by comparison.
