[quote=CyberCity;27099091]My observations are different, I do not see an "overwhelming majority" as retirees in the Kona area. But then again, this comes from a person who has spent years working in and around Kona, and has sent their children to school in Kona. Maybe it is a matter of "who you hang out with", leading to observations of age.

I should clarify and say I was refering to people relocating to Kona. From what we've seen and heard most are mainland retirees. But I don't claim to be any kind of expert on the Big Island, just soon to be a part time resident.

By the way, Waikoloa is not "windy most of the time". Although Waikoloa Village, luckily, does usually have useful breezes which help keep it cool at night and the air clear. Yes, it can get very windy, but that is not the ordinary.
Waikoloa always seems windy when I go by there. I have a friend that lives there and he says the same thing.

Here's a wind map of the Big Island. As you can see, the windy conditions in Waikoloa are not just in my imagination.

The area gets about 10 inches of rain a year and it looks it! Dry, low growing shrubs are all that can grow here and much of what you'll see is just black lava beds from "recent" eruptions.

This drive will take you up to Waikoloa which only has greenery because the area has water sprinklers. Because of the elevation Waikaloa is not only dry, its windy most of the time.

Drive south of the airport and you'll get into an area that gets more rainfall and thus is greener. Of course, the further south you go from the airport, the deeper you go into VOG territory.

Have a nice drive and let us know how it went!

What is the humidity like in those areas with the low rainfall such as Waikoloa and Airport Area?

City-Data Profiles are great places to get info like this. Notice the morning and afternoon humidity profile for the whole year on this Waikoloa Village profile:

On occasion, Waikoloa can be windy, very windy. But that is not the usual. The usual is a pleasant wind or breeze, that keeps the air moving. On many days of the year, Kona can be hot, and once you hit Waikoloa, you'll find nice breezes or light winds cooling it off. [Get as far as Kamuela, and some of us find it can be close to cold.]

The nice weather of Waikoloa is major part of its attraction ... for those who like dry elevation, breezes, and quiet. There are many places on the island that offer different weather patterns and living conditions, that is what what the Big Island so great, there is something for everyone.

Runs from 60 to 80%. Way too high for me. Perhaps somewhere else would be better.

Actually, Waikoloa does not "feel" so humid, because of the breeze. Charts are good, but do not give the nuances of living somewhere. That is why we keep saying to folks: Live somewhere before buying or signing a long term lease.

You know I keep reading people's post that say that, but right now, most of us are just doing preliminiary research, and it is way too pre-mature to just go to some possible candidate of a locale and live there.

Seems to me, if you don't want to answer questions on a forum, then you should reconsider why you are on the forum.

I think you misinterpreted what CC was saying. It's very common for people to come here saying they're planning to move to Hawai'i and buy some property, not necessarily in that order, and then they ask the same general questions here that have been asked many times because they haven't done the recommended basic research in the archives first, and then when we get into trying to advise them we find out they've never even been to Hawai'i, and they don't know the right questions to ask... yadda yadda yadda...

... so a certain set of mantras has fallen into common use, which could come from any of us, and which shouldn't be taken personally, but simply understood generally, because it is almost always a mistake to disregard their principles, and one of those is: "Live somewhere before buying or signing a long term lease."

I think you'll find that most people here are actually very helpful, but they'll do it on their own terms. And that's a very helpful lesson to learn early on about how a lot of the folks in Hawai'i are.
