So our offer was accepted and we are getting a house in Green Sands. I have had a hard time getting quotes from our current insurance company (GEICO) and the two agents I spoke with on the phone were idiots. The house is in lava zone six so I don't see why it should be this hard to get a simple homeowner's insurance policy. Any recommendations?

Contact Pyramid Insurance. They're Hawaiʻi-based and usually have no problems giving quotes for homeowner's policies. Here's a link...

hotz - do you mean the dwelling fire or homeowner's? Their website listed choices and I was told fire was the only required coverage.

Have either of you had to file a claim with these carriers or know of someone who has?

The State has a lot of info available on insurance companies at: Insurance — Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs

Note that hurricane insurance is required.

Hurricane insurance is only required if one's bank requires it for the approval of a mortgage on the home.

Yes, as the linked page states: "Banks require homeowners to have hurricane insurance as part of their mortgage approval."

We use State Farm in Kona. Jackie Rassay is our agent and is always helpful. 808-329-6393. We pay $461 annually, plus another $350 for hurricane insurance (required by mortgage company). Yeah, it's crazy; no hurricane has ever hit the BI.

Good luck with the purchase!

We're in Puna not Green Sands but we shopped around and Dongbu was the cheapest. We have the regular insurance plus the hurricane through them. It's about $35/month for both or $421 a year. Our previous insurer was USAA and their quote was 3x the Dongbu. The next cheapest than Dongbu was Liberty.

Who is doing the financing? (or maybe you aren't financing). Our mortgage broker pinged all the companies and gave us the no obligation quotes for us. We checked with some of the other big companies like USAA on our own and were really disappointed with their quotes.

The owner is financing and he just said fire insurance with him listed as additional insured. He offered to pay the insurance and add it to our monthly payment but I thought we would do better getting it ourselves.
