Looking for less expensive auto insurance on the Big Island.
Paying about $1000 a year now (Comp and Collision for new little car).
Excellent record.
When we were in Oregon we paid $300/yr for liability only.

Any comments appreciated.
Apples and oranges. You are comparing completely different kinds of insurance. Comp (comprehensive) and Collision provide coverage to repair or replace your car if it is damaged or stolen. Liability provides coverage to pay bills for injury or damage you cause to people or property.
Liability insurance is required in many states, including Hawai'i, and you must show proof of liability insurance to register your car, or when stopped by the police. The minimum coverage required in Hawai'i is low, so it's inexpensive. You can always buy more.
Coverage for Comprehensive loss is relatively expensive, by comparison.
Call your agent or insurance company and ask for a comparison.
The State of Hawaii regulates insurance like no other state. (That is good and bad)
In this case, good; as they maintain listings of home and auto costs that you can look at to help determine which might be your best fit. Note though, that in Hawaii, even most mainland agents cannot quote you a Hawaii insurance policy. You MUST deal with a Hawaii agent.

GEICO in Hawaii is a pleasant experience. The agents (call center) is located on Oahu. Due to a quirk in Hawaii's insurance laws, they have to be based here. That's a good thing. They not only know how to pronounce your street and town names, but have an idea of what life is like here - since they live here too.
I've always had good experiences with GEICO. Nice to know they are an option on the islands as well.
