We are looking for a place in either Hilo or Keaau (Big Island) Lava Zone 3 near the ocean.
Our car insurance is with State Farm and they will not insure houses that are within 1000 feet of the ocean (even in lava zone 3).
Does anyone know of an insurance company that will insure homes in that are within 1000 ft. of ocean ?
My understanding is that the insurance for (zone 3) combined with near ocean is LESS than if we were in (zone 2) combined with near ocean. Is this correct ?Does anyone know what the diff in insurance options are?
Thanks again for your help.

I don't know anything about these zones but it sounds like you need an insurance company that understands the difference between altitude and distance from the ocean

My opinion is that if you are going to be within 1000 feet of the ocean, you may as well find a spot on the ocean, cause the salt spray is going to cause you big issues either way. Meaning that if you are going to put up with that, you may as well have a front row seat.

cost difference between "front row seat" and across the street is HUGE.

I've found that you need to check indepth into insurance availability first, even before looking for a home; especially if you'll have a mortgage. Hurricane and lava hazard insurance can be quite expensive and in some areas not available at all. There are normally large deductables and low max coverage amounts. You need to check with local insurance agents that rep multple lines.

PS: The state of Hawaii also has lava hazard insurance but I believe the max is $300K.

I am not looking for advice on buying near or on the ocean.
See my original post on this thread, I am asking if anyone knows about insurance in zone 3 near the ocean and who is the agency they use.
Any help is appreciated.

Here are three to try:

SERVCO - 935-2937
Pyramid Insurance - 969-7174
Royal Insurance - 934-8677

My "cheat sheet" phone list for questions about local insurance providers also includes State Farm, but since you've already tried contacting them, I can only add these three right now. If you are working with a local Realtor, he/she may have other suggestions.

Must add: this is for informational purposes only. No endorsement of any particular company implied. It's been a while since I've worked with an East Hawaii insurance company, so I do recommend that you ask lots of questions!
