Ok. I think I may sound a little dim whittled, but where is the TOS again? I'm looking but can't find. Is under a specific heading or thumbnail. Do I have to go back to the first posted thread. I have the filter starting with the newest posts first.
As for the lowering stress. I'm anticipating some more pairing down of budgetary expectations for such a big pay cut. I can remember to some degree what it was like to be making this amount, and rent in NY has been at least 1k/month for many many years (not considering upstate NY, all downstate). I don't lead a luxurious life nor scraping by. I own my home but am putting it up for sale, no gains, a short sale because the market has not rebound enough to sell for what we owe. Things can be tight hear too even though I make double what I would get I Hawaii. So, I don't anticipate a stress free life. Just want less stress about crime, violence, aggressiveness, selfish me me me, looking for a pay out by suing, jump down your throat, could care less about whether you want or need help, etc.) basically the rat race. I'm looking forward to farmers markets (lots of fruit and veggies, I'm not much a milk drinker but do like cheeses, don't want to rely upon processed food otherwise, except peanut butter, lol). So, what I'm concerned about stress on Hawaii is related to not finding a place to rent that allows for 2 dogs (1big 1small), commutes over 30mins., needing to work multiple jobs to make ends meet, not having good access to healthcare. Any feedback?

I'm getting stressed reading about all this stress - anyway, if you are looking for short commutes and an island where $45K is livable (with a short commute), I'd probably focus on something other than Oahu.

Thanks to you both for the info. I'm still gathering info. I have spent several hours already reading as much threads as possible about living in and moving to Hawaii. Pros and cons. Considering them all.
Thank you again.

If you haven't found it yet, the link can be found at the top of every forum page, under Announcements.

You can't compare life on the Big Island with life on Staten Island... or wherever. It simply does not compute. That's why you really need to spend some time here before you can make a rational decision whether or not you want to live here.

There are probably just as many stressors in Hawai'i as you have there, some of them are just different stressors. Hawai'i is different in 1,001 ways.

So basically you're saying you want out of New York.

But consider, there are 48 other states to choose from besides Hawai'i, and all but Alaska are easier and cheaper to move to, and most involve far less radical life changes. And many are more accepting of pets.

Yes, the farmers markets in Hawai'i are great, but farmers markets can be found everywhere now. Cheese in Hawai'i tends to be more pricey than you may be used to. There are a few small cheese making operations in Hawai'i, primarily goat cheeses, but most cheese is shipped in from the mainland. As is most of the produce sold in stores. You have to change your diet if you want to get the full benefit of Hawaiian farmers markets, where Asian vegetables are predominant.

As you may have found by now, few places rent to pet owners, and fewer allow large dogs. Even places that allow pets often have weight limits and breed limits. Cats and small breeds are more acceptable. Sorry, it's just the way it is here.

commutes over 30mins.,
There is only one city in the entire state, and most communities are relatively small, so you might think this is not much of an issue. But it is a surprisingly common problem for people in Hawai'i, largely because of infrastructure issues. In Honolulu it is the familiar urban pattern of a lot of people having to live at a distance from their work to find affordable housing, and so the roads get jammed at rush hour. Hilo is the second largest community in Hawai'i, but it is only an unincorporated town of about 44,000... a big small town if you will. Yet when it's commute time, traffic backs up in spots, and just getting across town can take that long. And if you decide to live in Puna, for the lower housing costs, getting home from downtown can easily take 45 minutes, on a good day, because of the single two-lane highway in and out of the area. And it's not uncommon for Hilo residents to travel 2 hours or more each way for jobs on the Kona side where the resorts are and the tourist trade is centered.

needing to work multiple jobs to make ends meet,
Sadly, this is just a way of life for many people in Hawai'i.

not having good access to healthcare.
Sadly, this also is just a way of life for many people in Hawai'i. For specialists, travel to Oahu is common, and there is no ferry. The round trip can cost $150-300 at present. And for more serious conditions or more specialized care, travel to the mainland may be required.

Thank you for the info. Yeah, I ended up finding the TOS.
Seeing how it'll be so difficult to find a job beforehand AND affordable (pet accepting-large breed dog accepting and another small dog) housing within a reasonable commute for both me and my family member; I'm sad to say that HAwaii maybe an unreasonable move for us. Unfortunately, there isn't another place like Hawaii to move to on the mainland. I'm Asian mix, and have found through my travels that people aren't as welcoming as Hawaii was to me when I visited. But like I said, I won't give up my big baby and it would definitely be a deal breaker to moe to Hawaii.
Also, the commuting and traffic concerns are significant. Thanks for the detailed explanation of why it's an issue across all Hawaii. It seems likely that there'd be long commute for both me and my fam. member who'd be working one of the hotels.
I do remember how tight things were when I was making 40-50k and figure I may have to do that in another state anyway. Because of my allergies, I also have to consider that wherever I go. Sad, but thank you.

What happened to the original poster, Trixie4? It looks like Trixie4 is gone, dropped off the face of the earth, or at least the City-Data forum. Trixie4's last post was on June 14, 2013, over 2 months ago.

Suzieq_p: You might think about Florida or southern California if you are trying to escape the cold winters. Moving to Alaska won't help for that! If you live in a decent area in Florida or southern California, crime does not seem too bad. I've been checking out the west coast of Florida and southern Orange county in California, in addition to Maui and the Big Island. The medical facilities are probably better in either California or Florida than Hawaii for chronic medical problems. If the winter weather isn't the problem, you could move to Minnesota. The crime rates are relatively low, except for some urban areas in the city of Minneapolis or St Paul. The medical facilities are excellent here, especially places like the famous Mayo clinic.

If you have allergies you should consult an allergist NOW before making any decisions. We had a lawyer at the SHipyard who lasted three or four years in Hawaii before his doctors told him if he didn't leave his entire immune system would be compromised. He moved back to the Midwest.

Thank you. My pollen and weed allergies are specific to the mid to northeastern Atlantic. I've already gone through the analysis of the testing with my allergist. As for my mold allergy, it didn't completely drop off when I visited Hawaii, but did drop significantly. I live on an island already and we deal with a lot of mold too. But again, thank you. I have to reconsider a number of things before settling on another location. Lots of pros and cons to weigh for all locations. Just very disappointed because of the many reasons that I chose Hawaii.

^^^Very true!

Hi All! I'd like to thank everyone in this thread for taking the time to share in this 19 pager. ( hmmm is there a sowa eye smiley?) I'm yet another teleworking software developer guy. I grew up on Oahu and am plotting my return to da islands mon. (oops wrong islands) BI has been my top pick for a while.

No questions for the forum right now - plenny good info for me in this one. Scariest thing was the 'some subdivisions can be maxed out on broadband connections' so no soup for you. Wait, wait, the HGTV show is the scariest. (I know I am being hypocritical here - close the door after I get in.)

Thanks again,

Jay

ps this is my very first post on C-D so I could be a dog!
