Well, the fish and birds are migratory so they came of their own accord. I would imagine most of the plants are native as well. Then the mosquitoes had to come along....

Anyway, I've moved into my new place with decent screens and somehow, a gecko is able to get between the siding. If a gecko can, any number of mosquitoes can. What I do to test it out is tape up all of the siding on the screens and leave a lamp on. As you may have guessed, mosquitoes are still able to get in and hang out by the lamp.

Not only is that problematic, I've found that the stray cats are dropping fleas in front my door and they hop onto my leg when I enter the house. The previous owner had been feeding the cat and hanging out with it indoors, so now I've found myself moved into a flea infestation.

Jesus Christ. If it weren't for the insects, I'd be happily settled into Hilo by now.

Every living thing on the islands came from elsewhere originally, slowly over the milennia, taking root and adapting into endemic species before humans arrived, bringing even more species of plants and animals and microrganisms with them. James Michener described the process at the beginning of his epic book "Hawaii."

Mosquitoes arrived in the 1820s, via ship. Sorry you're having such a bad time with them.

I'm extremely allergic to mosquitoes. I use Amazon lights products and they are really helpful. The Amazon Lights Store - Amazon Lights | Amazon Lights
They say to not use indoors but with windows open I still do. Or set them up on the front steps? They are good for a 15 foot diameter area. Course I'm in MN not in the rain forest like you, wonder how they would work there.

BlaineWalden,

My husband and I brought our 2 kids (dogs) with us and we did the whole process ourselves. It looks overwhelming but it really is not that bad. You just need ti break it down into step/months or weeks. It is not cheap either, by the time you do all the things you need to do and ship them here it can run you $2,000.00 (and that is doing it yourself). As far as renting a place I would look at property management companies for rentals. Craiglist can be good, but you run the risk of getting taken. If you have a friend here on the island I would suggest you use them to go see the house you plan to rent if you are not able to. That is what we did for a few friends of ours, so of the place they had us check looked nothing like the ad on CL. That being said we have never had an issue finding a place to stay on the island with dogs, we hope to be in our new house soon and then we won't have to worry about that any more.
