Thanks for the info. I hope to ride. Still looking for a place to rent a mountain bike on the Hilo side. I rented from Kona bike works in January, but I would hate to drive that far. I believe there are 3 bike shops in Hilo and one should rent mountain bikes.

Kalopa State Park was one of our favorite places when we lived on the B.I. Beautiful place. Keep an eye peeled for the pheasants. Renting a cabin (or half a cabin) is the way to go, and you can do all your cooking and stuff at the main building. Great place to meet people. Be wary of camping on the weekends because we had trouble a few times w/ rowdies who rented one half of our cabin building and partied all night long. Very loud. I went to look for the ranger but he wasn't at his place, so the wife finally convinced them to go to the main house and party there. If I had gone over there it would have just been a confrontation, so that worked, for once. It was too bad, because the vibe there is really peaceful and quiet, but you never know who will show up I guess. Camping during the week or on Sunday, we never had any problems.

I've never rented a bike there, but you may want to think about buying a low line mountain bike from WallyWorld in Hilo for probably less money if you plan on keeping it for a few days. You could always sell it later. It wouldn't be a tricked out stump jumper, but it would do the job for a short spell. And if you total it, you wouldn't have to replace the expensive rental bike.

Mid Pacific Wheels in Hilo, say they rent mountain bikes on their web site. I sent them an email but have not heard back, probably an island time thing or April is too far away to give a good answer.
