You should go for it dude. The locals always try to talk mainlanders out of coming here. Not that I blame them. The prime attraction of big island Hawaii is it is still not crowded here. If you are hard core independent minded, can think on your feet, and roll with the punches (they will happen) you will fit right in. If you get discouraged easily then they are right. Don't come.

With the skill set you described I'd say Live the Dream. I bought some land here after several visits, built a house on it myself with my own hands, and I'm never going back. Hawaii is no paradise, it has people on it, but it is one of the nicest places you will find anywhere on earth.

Visit first. Get off the plane. Get out of the terminal and take a deep breath and look around. This place will either grab you with both hands right then and there, or it won't. Do NOT commit to come here based on a fantasy of what this place is like.

I hope the place grabs you. Too many dopers, losers and parasites come here on one way tickets.

The OP hasn't posted since last November, so we probably won't hear much from him again.

I can understand him wanting to get out of Minnesota winters, but folks should want to move to Hawaii, not merely away from where they are. Hawaii is a bit expensive and has other drawbacks that makes it less than an ideal choice for folks who are just trying to run away from something. Although, this is about as far away as it is possible to get so that might have some value to some folks occasionally.

He also seems a bit underfunded for what he wants to do. He mentioned three acre lots, so most likely he was looking at Fern Forest or Hawaiian Acres. Neither one of those two "subdivisions" have much in the way of CCR's. However, they are all zoned AG, so an auto repair shop probably isn't quite in that agricultural designation. Not that he couldn't be illegal about it for awhile, but should someone base their livelihood on illegal activities? Or rather, doing legal activities in an improper spot? Should he run afoul of his neighbors or the County then he'd be out of business.

Here's the County Code and Chapter 25 is the one which covers zoning: County of Hawaii - County Code

He might be able to get by as a mobile mechanic, doing minor repairs from a truck. I don't know what the regulations are on that, but he'd probably not have to worry about zoning? If he is able to fix cars, you'd think there'd be spot for him around here somewhere although it may not be the one he is imagining.
