Hi Punatics!!

Just love that word. My wife and I are hoping to relocate and build in Leilani Estates within the next year. We currently live in Sonoma County in Northern California about 60 miles north of San Francisco. Any info on the extent of pests (termites, coqui frogs, ants, etc.) and control methods (if any) will be greatly appreciated.

We look forward to establishing a new life style and making new friends.

My tip regarding termites: we have seen some problems with cabinets that are installed as a new construction is being completed. Cabinets have been sitting in storage somewhere where termites are present and they are brought into the new house. I've heard that the termite companies are beginning to treat just cabinets for some customers. I'm not sure how widespread the problem is, but it's something to be aware of...

Aloha DJGO, I live in Leilani. We've got plenty termites, coqui and greenhouse frogs, several kinds of ants. You can pretreat your housesite for termites, (a requirement for concrete slabs), spray for the ants. The frogs can be knocked back by using lime spray mix, but they will return. Cynmkolohe is right as usual, my house is treated wood, cedar siding, redwood ceilings, no problem there, but I have found termites in my kitchen cabinets, in the oak flooring, trim boards, pine shelving. It's been sprayed, but the damage is done. Also be careful buying furniture. I bought a new bamboo futon from a warehouse store in Hilo that came with termites.

THANKS LEILANIGUY, MY WIFE AND I LOOK FORWARD TO MEETING EVERYONE IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THIS WILL BE QUITE A CHANGE FOR US AS WE DO NOT HAVE THE AMOUNT OF PESTS IN SONOMA COUNTY, CA THAT IT APPEARS THRIVE IN PUNA. HOWEVER, WE LOVE THE AREA AND WILLINGLY ACCEPT THE CHALLENGES. I FORGOT TO ASK ABOUT SOLAR. DO YOU FEEL THERE IS ENOUGH SUN TO GENERATE ALL OR A PORTION OF OUR OWN ELECTRICITY? MAHALO

DJ, I would repost the solar question as a new topic.

I agree that this is a subject worthy of a new thread, but just for a data point: Our son put a solar system on his house in El Cajon, CA, and his electric meter runs backwards in the daytime. I'm pretty certain that the sunshine quotient in Puna is as good as or better than in Southern California.

For pest control, a few cats, (can let you have some really cheap!!!) bunch of geckos, a few mongeese, and you should be good to go. Cats, no more, well, at least not that many, mice and rats, geckos, no more misquitos, swarming termites, mongoose, centipede is one of their favorite pupus. You do not want to, however, get these three exterminators into close proximity of one another at any given time.......

Aloha and okolemaluna

Default Leilaniguy, are you still out there?

We retired and moved to Leilani 3 years ago and love it here. We are on lower Nohea St.

Aloha Cheryl, Still here. I've lived near the top of Leilani on Hapuu St. for about nine years now. Before that I'd lived in Puna off and on, in Nanawale and up in Hawaiian Acres. Lower Nohea is a nice street, a good friend of mine used to live there next to the German nut farmers.
