Driving into Hilo town today from Hamakua coast there's that really clear view of the volcano from the highway near Peepeeko. It looked like a big forest fire with all the smoke going up.

Default Governor signs emergency proclamation as lava moves toward homes

The lava only advanced 150 yards overnight, but state and county officials have begun to plan ahead in case the lava does reach homes or the Highway...

Quote:
Gov. Neil Abercrombie, meanwhile, signed an emergency proclamation Friday in preparation for lava crossing Highway 130, which could isolate lower Puna communities from the rest of the island. The proclamation would allow officials to open abandoned roads as alternate routes.

County officials said the surface lava flow continues in an east-northeast direction with little vegetation burning. Subsurface activity also continued, evidenced by steam plumes coming from underground cracks, they said late Friday morning.

While the surface lava flow does not pose an immediate threat to homes in the Kaohe Homesteads subdivision, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists estimates the flow is .7 miles from the border of the subdivision and could reach the area within a week if it continues flowing in the underground crack system.

Is there any way to divert a lava flow if it even poses an extreme threat? Like maybe building cement barriers or digging trenches? They are doing that in Japan Because of Mount Fuji. NIPPONIA

The problem like i believe others will tell you is that Hawai'i volcanos are different, most are shield shaped vs the cone shaped volcanos you see other places. Its important to understand that Hawai'i volcanos also produce a different kind of lava, in Hawai'i the lava is hotter and runnier then your cone shaped volcanos produce. This is also why hawaii volcanos are shield shaped.

Pretty much any man made barricade wouldn't work to hot and runny.
Heres a video about Hawai'i volcanos and make up. Its actually good and educating.

Not feasible because if one person diverts lava from his property towards another persons property he would become liable for any and all damages caused by such diversion. Also, Madam Pele would get Royally miffed!

Here's a news story on that very subject.

Oh heck ive been gone to long from Hawai'i. You want lava safety? Find a little old lady with a small dog with her sometimes, you will often find her around the valcano areas and offer her a drink of water or if she asks say yes auntie and get it for her. This is madam pele and she will divert the lava and protect your property for your kindness. As crazy as it sounds she is real.

It occurs to me that this proclamation of emergency probably also provides a workaround to spend government funds for work on private roads, which is normally forbidden by state law. That's why there is normally no county maintenance on most subdivision streets, because they're not public thoroughfares.

With the chaos of Tropical Storm Iselle fresh in everyone's minds, I wonder if the Civil Defense teams will be able to open up alternate escape routes which stay open permanently? Seems like a golden opportunity to me.

My thoughts too. Now's the perfect time to open up Railroad and Beach/Wa'a Wa'a road, all the way to Hilo, reopen Chain-of-Craters road and maybe punch a short tie-in road between Nanawale and The Beaches, Leilani at N. Nohea St. and HWY 132 and Seaview from "Top Road" up to HWY 130 among others. All it would take is a D9.

Good news for residents on Saturday... the lava flow seems to be "losing steam."

Quote:
The Hawaii Civil Defense Agency said Saturday that an inspection made by helicopter of the area shows the lava had flowed about 50 yards since Friday. The agency reported the flow advanced about 150 yards between Thursday and Friday. The flow was moving at almost 300 yards a day earlier in the week.
