We're moving to the big island this year and plan on renting until we find a house. We have 3 elephants we rescued from a circus that we plan on bringing over on a barge. They are completely house trained and trumpet loudly whenever they need to go out. They are also very docile, our dogs and grizzly bear (which we'll also be bringing) get along with them just fine. I can't imagine we'll have any issues finding a dog and grizzly friendly landlord, but I'm a little but worried about the elephants. Does anyone have any recommendations? I did a forum search but had no luck.
I also keep reading about how the locals don't like "mainland attitude". Do you think the locals will resent our elephants and grizzly bear?
Last but not least, do you think I'll have any difficulty finding a job? I normally head up a deodorant testing team. Is there much of a demand for this on the big island?
Just make sure the elephants have a rabies vaccines 120 days before coming so they don't have to go into quarantine on Oahu. In the fine print of the quarantine law you will find a grizzly bear exemption from quarantine, but some airport rent a cops may try to quarantine the grizzly with the elephants, so have a copy of the regulations with you when you arrive, just in case.
I wouldn't worry about fitting in with the locals because of the bear and elephants, but you may have trouble getting them to accept a dog as a pet. If anybody asks, just tell them that's how you do it on the mainland, and suggest that they need new laws to accommodate your pet choices. Make sure to call them stupid - that's a greeting white people have for locals. Their greeting for you is F'ing haole, so don't be confused when they are just spreading the aloha!
I am not sure about deodorant testing opportunities on the big island, but believe the big island mayor employed a ball juggling snake charmer on his recent trip to Oahu - you might want to see if there is a franchise opportunity available for that job on the big island.
Good luck on your move!

I think a large majority of the population on the Big Island don't use deodorant. So you may not have much interest in your deodorant testing team. Better find another skill set before moving.

See, I spend all day hanging out with DOH and she has to go and make it personal.
I swear, I applied deodorant this morning.
Oops, just checked my deodorant, it was a glue stick....

I'm sorry, but you are getting some bad advice here, you in fact will have a very hard time with bringing your elephants to Hawaii.
You didn't specify, but since you said they got along with your bear, I am assuming they are African Elephants. What a lot of people here know (but will never admit) is that elephants are just flat out unwelcome (except Asiatic elephants, but that's another story entirely).
In 1941, Disney studios released Dumbo. At that time, Walt Disney was locked in a heated battle over his development of the Aluani Resort (yes, things move slowly in Hawaii). Walt was unable to secure the concessions he required from the local planning commission and as such used his animation studio to make the movie Dumbo which was widely seen as a stinging and overtly racist portrayal of the citizens of Hawaii. As such, Hawaii still holds deep seated anger towards the Disney corproration (which is why there is still no Disneyland in Oahu) and elephants by proxy are widely reviled. As a matter of fact, those folks who do have elephants here almost never take them out of their houses and you will rarely if ever see one in public.

I always say I feel dressed up if I am wearing clean clothes when I go shopping at the Malama Market in Ocean View. Oh, yeah, that's where you live.
