We outfitted our house primarily from the stores of Bamboo and Teak. They have two locations in Kailua, one near near the industrial area behind Target and the other up near Home Depot. They specialize in some new furniture as well as selling used hotel furniture. The hotel furniture we bought was well made, lightly used and of good quality. The new furniture tended to be imported and made from teak or mahogany (which holds up well in the humidity). There aren't that many new furniture places and much of it is pricey.

A lot of people use "outside" furniture indoors. It's usually a bit cheaper to buy, easier to move, and most importantly easiest to clean. Maybe not a problem if you run A/C all the time.

If you move from the mainland and have a container to fill buy whatever you can from IKEA. What you find on this island is either rickety Walmart stuff or over prized 'tropical' Asian style pieces. Sometimes you get lucky and find nice vintage furniture at a garage sale.

Good advice, but be careful of the construction. I don't shop at IKEA, so I don't know about the construction of their furniture. But one thing that we caution people about with furniture is to not buy anything made of particle board or pressed wood because it will fall apart in the humidity. That's why stuff from WalMart is "rickety".

Thanks to all for your help.
I love bamboo and teak a lot, so that's a good idea.
I've heard of the used hotel furniture too ... I found a place on line in Hilo

Any other advice will be appreciated .... Thanks again

Also try garage/ moving sales in upscale neighborhoods; Sunrise Ridge, Kaloli Point, etc. Sometimes find fantastic deals.

We've bought a few pieces from Teak & Bamboo, although most of them were eventually resold since they were just a hair too big for an old plantation house. It looks nice at first glance, but it's not finely built furniture. Solid wood, though, and holds up well. Most of our furniture is a mix of Craig's List and garage sales. Some of it is built by either us or our friends, especially the koa stuff.

Furnitureland in Hilo has a variety of new sofas, chairs, tables, lamps, etc. Prices are fair and they have some pretty good sales. It's good for the basics, and you can supplement with Island decor of you want to.
