Last night the Akebono theater and luquins restaurant were destroyed by fire. Haven't seen the damage yet, village road closed, but this ripped the heart out of our town.

Oh, no! I LOVE that little town. When two social venues like a restaurant and a theater burn, it really DOES take the heart out of your town. I am so sorry. We'll be there in about 3 weeks, and I know it's going to hurt seeing the destruction, even though we never went to either business--I preferred Boogie Woogie Pizza, where we stopped every morning for my "breakfast"--a strawberry banana smoothie, and the occasional pizza or order of cheesy bread.

OTOH, as close-packed as most of the buildings in that downtown core are, it's probably a wonder that more damage wasn't done. Small blessings, I guess....

I hope the owners of the businesses have insurance, and can rebuild and get back to a normal life sometime in the not too far away future. My heart goes out to the entire town.

It appears to be a total loss. Here's a link to a news story with some photos...

Awwwwwww this is awful. I'll be there in a few weeks to visit some family and friends and will be staying in Pahoa. This will be sad to see.

Went by this afternoon, both buildings are toast, along with a pawn shop and damage to the Kava bar where the fire supposedly started. We were going to have breakfast at Luquin's, our usual eggs bene before making our monthly grocery trek to Hilo.

Oh no, that's a very sad thing to lose iconic buildings in a small town! It's been a long time since we'd been to either place, but there's a lot of folks who will be missing them.

So sorry to see it all go, the theater was used every week, but Luquin's was always there, the best, almost 24/7 with good, plain Mexican food and great Lilikoi margarita's. It is like a good friend has died.

Hmmm, what would it take to rebuild that? Was it burned to the ground?
