Well, Amadrid, maybe you will settle down this time. So I've been reading everything I can get my eyes on about moving there. When it comes to what to ship, it's all over the board.

The last time I moved 10 years ago, with the exception of my bed, I started from scratch with furniture. I actually regretted not keeping "a few" things that I really liked. Partially due all of my kitchen "stuff," looks like I will have to go with the standard smallest container. Yes, it's expensive, but it takes a long time to build up the kitchen for someone who doesn't eat out all that much and likes to bake for coworkers and neighbors. I would also like "a few" of my furniture pieces and some art work (questionable how long the latter may survive there but I'd like to try). I can afford it at the moment, but my financial future is unknown, so unsure about scrambling around over there to re-purchase all that much.

And like myself, you have moved around a lot. Sometimes it's just nice to have some things that are familiar to you. Maybe you know that feeling. I'm taking my bed frame. It's the only piece of furniture I have from my first home, and besides, I really like it.

Good luck, and I'm sure you'll decide what works best for you.

We’re doing the same as you, as soon as we sell our home. The only additional problems are that we’re shipping from Florida, and it takes about 10 months for the permit and building a home, and we cannot start the process until we sell our home.

My wife and I brought all of our art, my collection of books, and random things that had "meaning" for us. We didn't bring any furniture. The first place we moved into was "furnished". The second place we moved to was unfurnished, which necessitated us going and buying stuff that is to our taste. We are very happy now, because I am not into bamboo and wicker from the early 80's.

We used PODS moving and storage. They were the most expensive for the size, but the service, for us, was perfect. They dropped off a small shipping container. We had three days to fill it. They picked it up, transported it to the docks in California, received it in Honolulu, then transported it to Maui. We showed up and unloaded it. Our stuff wasn't damaged in the least.

Good luck with your move!

What do you have against bamboo and wicker furniture? LOL Sounds like it all worked out well for you. Good to hear. I'm sure it will take a while to find my new normal there.

I'm going to bundle the shipping container with shipping my car, which helps a little with the cost, and registering one car is included. That alone may be worth a lot from what I've read. There will still be a good amount of re-purchasing, but we'll just have to see if the sellers of whatever home I buy may leave some decent furniture. Whoever buys mine is getting a pretty new, very nice leather sectional and a very cool (and a bit pricey) sofa table that I never gave any thought to how difficult it would be to clean. They can have it and good riddance.

Aloha!

Registering your vehicle is not hard. You need an insurance card, then get State inspection (easy), then go to DMV for the license plate, then go back to where you got your state inspection done and they will put the sticker on your car. I think the hardest part is the waiting in line at DMV.

Buying furniture along with the house is a good idea, as long as you like the furniture. You may get stuck that that rattan kitchy stuff you don't like LOL, because it's everywhere. But it works while you are getting settled.

We plan on moving at the end of spring though we are not sure exactly sure what part of the island. We should hopefully know in a couple months. We have decided to sell pretty much everything and what we don’t sell, pack up in storage. We are just going to box and ship what we need through USPS. We figure about 10 large boxes at most and our car through Matson. Start new and fresh.
