Catz,

Would you consider trying out the rental float tank, informally interviewing the owner wrt operation, costs, maintenance and writing up a thread?

Id be interested in an impartial evaluation. (Not discounting the members experience that already like floating.)

Im biased because im in pain almost all the time and any benefits (pain relief) i derived would be over exaggerated.

Maybe we could encourage you for the benefit of all. Not to put you on the spot or anything....

Mr. P

Quiet drives a person crazy? Of course there are many who are deaf/Deaf who aren't particularly crazy anymore than those of us who hear well. Eh?

That it is a shock for people who hear well to be suddenly deprived of that sense is not too surprising ... but speculation seems to have run away with itself a bit in the matter as cited.

For those who have never been in one of these tanks, you are suspended in a solution of epsom salts at just below body temperature in a dark quiet environment. I believe they were invented by Dr. John Lily, who eventually went on to become one of the world's preeminent dolphin researchers. He wrote a book called "The Scientist" detailing his experiments with psychoactive drugs (particularly ketamine) in isolation tanks and his subsequent break from reality. This was eventually made into a movie (Altered States) that was so completely 'hollywooded' as to be unrecognizable.

If you don't go nuts on drugs that can make you kooky, isolation tanks are great for those with lower back pain, incredibly relaxing and a great way to improve your quality of life. I'd say two hours in a tank are better than the best night of sleep I've had in the last 30 years.
Thanks Mike, it all makes sense now. "Isolation" tank sounds freaky, while "float" tank sounds more therapeutic, and your post explains it well.

The rental tank is about two hours drive each way, so any positive results would be ruined by having to sit in a car for that long, no doubt. It is an interesting idea, though, and were we not getting ready to run off for a month's vacation starting next week, I'd entertain the idea more seriously. Maybe I could put it on the list of things for the house sitter to do?

On the choice of metals to use and such, there's a discussion about it on an engineering site: Seawater Corrosion vs. Magnisium Sulfate(Epsom Salt) - Saltwater corrosion engineering - Eng-Tips They don't mention costs but they do discuss various materials to make them out of.

Considering how expensive (and corrodable) metals are around here, some sort of plastic or fiberglass tank may be in order.

As you mentioned earlier, just using magnesium sulfate in a hot tub may be much easier. They can be adjusted for temperature and that may solve re-engineering an existing system there, too. Guess I'm just lazy.

They have them on the mainland. I went in one in Tacoma WA and it was very relaxing.

At this point in my life, recently hit the half century mark, i think more parts of me are stressed than those that are relaxed. Lol

Not sure if this kind of a question is allowed of a mod but terms like soothing, relaxing, bad back or even my own recent question/ thread A BAD NEIGHBOR could literally have hundreds of different definitions/ uses.

Would you feel comfortable giving just one example, or more, more is cool too, of HOW it was relaxing?
What actually happened?

* Hindsight being 20/20 i probably should have posted this thread in the health and wellness section or on a different forum altogether.

Relaxation isnt really a topic for the big island forum...
JK

Thanks in advance,
Mr. P

Well, for context my husband disliked it...

For me I loved the total lack of sensation....my body floated into a position (whatever it was) that was completely comfortable, there was no sensory feedback to my body, and my brain just floated along with my body...

BUT, because I have control issues () I WAS concerned that anyone could walk into the room I was in, and I opened the door to my tank a couple times to make sure I could... so despite that, it was amazing I relaxed the amount I did.

Luckily for me Mrs. Perfect is very adventurous so she was an easy sell for both moving to Hawaii and restructuring our lives to include MORE relaxation.

We moved here, we changed our lifestyle considerably (she is a professional chef), we walked over 2,500 miles last year, we lived off grid, we fly fished almost every weekend, we built a bunch of projects together and she loved every minute of it... she is my hero.

Sorry, this post should probably be moved to the 'i love my wife' section of CDF... does CDF even have that section?

Oh well,

Mr. P
