Aloha,
My name is Eirika and I grew up in O’ahu. I am looking to buy undeveloped land in thenext year or two somewhere with green growth and within 45 minutes of a surfable beach. I prefer to live amongst trees but would be happy to settle for bushes. I plan to build an off the grid home and music studio so I prefer some solititude but would like good neighbors since I know it can be dangerous as a woman living alone.

Please send me a message if you know anyone selling property.

I am in Big Island this week looking at properties in Mountain View, Ocean View, and Volcano. However, I know Mountain View is an unsafe area, Ovean View is pretty much all lava rocks, and Volcano seems really far from the beach. I’m still giving these areas a look though and would appreciate any tips, advice, or knowledge on the areas.

Mahalo my friends
Eirika

Some of the larger 'sub-divisions', especially the further off the highway you get, are places I would not recommend. It's safer to be near nice neighbors.

Is this applicable to all parts of the Big Island or just those areas?

We live in ocean View and are about halfway up the subdivision on Pineapple. Our neighbors are nice and the homes are well kept...but it’s rural, you’d have to drive to a beach for surfing though

Thanks for the lovely response! I’ve been a little turned off by there being only about 4 inches of top soil inOcean View so I don’t think it’s a place for me since I’m trying to find more lush...

I’m really in love with the idea of Mountain View right now, I like how they give out free water in town lol. Sounds like there’s a lot of crime there, though.

Will be looking at some lots in the next couple days. We’ll see how they resonate.

Has anyone ever built a house using wood found on their property? Random questions, sorry. My family is from the Philippines and we have cute little bamboo huts

Haha sorry that was a dumb question and I had to log in to reclarify.. I know bamboo is used for houses in the Phiippines cause its shape is already great for building and Hawai’i doesn’t really have trees like that especially in the Big Island where most of the vegetation is still young.

I guess what I mean to ask is what kind of wood do most people use to build their homes here and if there’s anyone who works with native wood

Some people use ohia logs for interior posts, or possibly exterior posts in outbuildings such as carports and sheds. Otherwise, you won't see much of this for two reasons. First, there's not much to work with. Second, most people want their home to last for at least a couple decades.

Cattley guava- Vivee- is not recommended because termites and other wood eating critters like it. The same could be said for any bamboo you may find growing in the area. Basically, you should use treated lumber to avoid having your home become a living compost factory.

There are a few surf spots near Pahala and Na'alehu on the South East end. Honuapo is a locals surfing spot but the entry is from a pebble/smooth rock beach. Land in that area can be cheap and lush.

Do you know how much it rains in Mountain View? I have friends who used to live there, and I remember times when they got 9" in one day!

Seems like it is always raining in Mountain View. I like Naalehu, the weather is good there.
Also I believe that there are companies that will build you a kit home out of bamboo.
