My wife and I went to the big island in the spring of 2017 and had an amazing experience hiking in Kalapana to see the lava entering the ocean.

We plan to visit again this coming weekend and are wondering if there are still any spots to see active lava? If not, what would be the best spots be awed again by our Mother Nature?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Kilauea has temporarily stopped erupting, so no active lava at this time. You could visit the park to see the dramatic change that's occurred with the crater. Much wider and deeper now.

Also, you could go down to Isaac Hale Beach and the new black sand beach at Pohoiki. At both you can see Madame Pele’s power to change the land.

Please don’t go driving through Leilani Estates, where fissure eight is located. 700 people in that area lost their homes, and we need to give them peace and privacy to begin rebuilding their lives.

Thanks! We definitely want to visit Kilauea again. Must be quite a different view now. I've heard that the Iki crater has been closed. Is it true?

Thanks for the recommendation and kind reminder! When visiting, we will be mindful and respectful of the locals. Seeing recently created land by Madame Pele must feel very special.

The loop is not open. You can descend, walk through crater and then must turn around. The one hillside is not deemed to be safe, apparently.

you can view hardened lava in a lot of places.

fresh lava flow is unpredictable, but after the latest eruptions, scientists are predicting might be dormant for a decade or longer.

Sounds good, need more tourists like you. A lot seem to have the mentality that they can do and go where ever they want. Then they wind up being a statistic. Warning signs seem like bull and out of place until you get washed out to sea by a rogue wave or riptide or pounded into the beach by shorebreak or fall off a cliff or hit by a landslide or freeze to death on a mountain. etc.
