Garlic won't grow, and it's difficult to find an onion that will bulb up. Green onions and shallots do well, though. Short day onions should work.

U of H seed program has some onions which should work. Their seeds are made for Hawaii, they don't have a very large variety, but they do have seeds for local conditions. CTAHR has more information about growing things in Hawaii than just about anyone else, although their search engine is a bit difficult to work with.

Well, move over here and start a garden club. We don't have a garden club and it would be fun to have one, don'tcha think? There's stuff for farmers, but for the folks who just have a garden, there's not an official club.

I knew about the garlic but onions never occurred to me. I don't usually grow larger varieties of onions, mostly because they are cheap and widely available where I live now.

I 2nd the garden club. I would love to join.

We will probably evolve a garden club at the Honokaa Hongwanji. Currently it's a 'Crafty Group' that meets on Tuesdays, but one person who comes over is starting to build a small garden behind the kitchen. Other folks are starting to bring more plants and seeds to swap and for him to plant. So, I guess it's 'Crafty & Gardening Group' now. Some folks just drop by to chat, so it's also 'Crafty & Gardening Social Group'. It will probably evolve into a hang out and have fun kinda group, I'm guessing.
