Interesting video for those considering the move. I love these series videos from CNBC:

There's some text below the video in the link. Much faster than waiting for the whole video. She lost her job due to Covid, he has childcare payments from some kids in a previous relationship so they didn't start out debt free and were on half income for awhile. The title should be 'living on $50,000 per year in Hilo Hawaii' since that's how much they were living on when she wasn't working.

"The title should be 'living on $50,000 per year in Hilo Hawaii' since that's how much they were living on when she wasn't working."

"Living on $26,000 per year" would be more accurate considering he is $30k in arrears for child support payments so is probably making double payments (estimating to be $2,000/month for both payments).

$26k isn't enough to live anywhere.

I don’t know how a family can comfortably live on $50,000 a year anywhere, especially in Hawaii.

It seems tough in my view, too. Yet I know many who do it, which always dumbfounds me. Government assistance or living in very undesirable areas with a low cost of living would be key. I know a family in NYC (they live in Sunset Park under a Section 8 voucher) whose only non-government subsidized income in a family of 7 for years was the father, who earned $38k a year.

You can't - but obviously people do it. Skip cable - pass on the Playstation - drive your 20 year old car - things break and don't fix it - but don't worry, public assistance will bail you out......

Public assistance helps. Too bad it’s a way of life for many people.
