I have a first-time visitor with me who will miss a luau experience because the luaus are booked to the middle of July. In years past, luau tickets were easy to obtain, but not this year. I'm told you can see the Royal Kona luau entertainment from the hotel bar. Does anybody know if this is true? I hate that she's missing the show because I didn't act in time. We'll have dinner at the hotel if there's a chance to see part of the show.
Many years ago we attended an authentic Hawaiian Luau in Honolulu, put on by a Local church (possibly Mormon?) for it's members. Guests were welcome. It was far more enlightening than any of the hokey sing-along, dance-along, drunken commercial luaus I've attended since.
Perhaps check your area to see if any private groups are having events you could attend?
You can grab drinks at the bar and watch it from the pool. You can see it from the restaurant. Depending on your room you can see it from your lanai too. I used to work there. It looks like it's going to rain so they'll probably have to reschedule everyone. Sometimes they'll put it inside but if they are booked they can't fit everyone inside. Check the Expedia desk to see if there's anyway you can get tickets it's an open bar and the food is not bad at all.
Update: We had dinner at the bar and while she didn't get the full luau experience, it was fun. We didn't hear the music but saw the performances. We had drinks, appetizers, dinner, and dessert, and spent less than half of the cost of the luau. The food was delicious, it wasn't crowded, and they validated parking.

Thank you. Updates are great, especially when they involve fun, food and generally a good time.
You probably had more fun than if you had gone to the "luau".
thanks for the update.
