Anyone know of any thrift stores, especially those that specialize in children's clothes and furniture, on the Big Island? Either Kona or Hilo? Thanks!

The very best stuff in terms of clothing is to be found at church rummage sales, which are ubiquitous on the Big Island.

Kona or Hilo? You should specify which town as it wouldn't make sense if you live in Kona to drive to Hilo to save money on clothing or vice-versa.

Our house is half way between Kona and Hilo, in Naalehu. Doesn't matter to us which way we go because they are the same distance. So that's why I said "Kona or Hilo". It really doesn't matter. By the way, thanks almost_hawaiian and mogon for your replies.

You're welcome.

In Hilo, there is a Goodwill store on the mauka side of the road on the way to the Port of Hilo. Downtown there is a Salvation Army store. Both are kind of hard-scrabble, imo.

There is a also a church-run thrift shop on Keawe, one block mauka of Kam Ave. I don't know as much about it.

I really have seen some absolutely amazing finds at church rummage sales; they tend to be in the late spring or early fall and can usually be found in the Tribune-Herald. The other Hilo-side source for such information (and a whole host of other stuff!) is the Mynah Bird radio show.
