The kids are only infants, 6 months and another on the way. Yes, I am concerned about a decent education. I think I'll look into homeschooling as an option. A private homeschool can be one of the most successful motivators, if run by a dedicated and talented individual. Maybe there are some individuals who live in these areas just praying for a chance to help educate some kids on a part-time basis. I had a friend that ran a 6 child home-school from her home for several years. All her students were well-behaved and educated. She encouraged religious values as an aid and it worked well. I wonder about churches in the area and their schooling interests. I'm not affiliated with any particular church or religion at this time, but I highly value the teachings of the commandments. Any positive guidance tool to improve civilization is far better than living like wild savages!

Sounds like a good plan! I will be interested in hearing your reflections after you have lived here for awhile. Some think we all live like savages over here...part of the charm of Hawaii.

Default Savage remark!!

Hopefully you realize I'm referring to the world as a whole! I'm going to Hawaii ironically to get away from tooooo much civilization, which I have realized is not natural! I love a little positive 'savage' behavior once in a while!

Also lots of wild guava. There are many others that do well here that I just haven't planted yet. Things I CAN'T get to grow are tomatoes, corn or squash, either too wet or too many bugs.

Aloha! my family is also moving to Pohoa to be with my parents. Do you sell your produce at he market or off the land? I am all about buying local food .

No, not really enough to sell. I've only got 1 acre and part of that is forest, so there are only a few fruit trees of each variety. What we usually do is leave our excess by the road for the neighbors or give it to friends. They do the same, so there's a fairly constant supply of free fruit. There are farmers markets on the weekends and some roadside stands.
