I think childcare can be expensive no matter where you go. This why I work from home/part time.
When weighting the options of two incomes, plus childcare, vs one income, no childcare, and no additional commute. Ultimately, the extra $200 we would come ahead was not worth the hassle.

With buying, you may have to be willing to commute, to find something affordable that can allow you to survive off one income. Or places that need some fixing up but are livable in the meantime. I found a job which I can do at home, I make back the money lost from my income, and then some.

I think the OP really touches on a lot of important points when it comes to moving to BI. Granted it can be vastly different, just like the geography of the island. Some area's are much more affordable to buy in. But your commute will be long. Where some areas will be nice, even gates, with a short commute. I think what it boils down to... how bad do you want it?

Are you willing to fly over to Oahu for doctors appointments, in the event it is something that can not be handled on BI? Furthermore, can you afford that?

A big money saver for us, is shopping the farmers markets for our produce. It may not sound like a lot, but it is a saving, plus you support your community! We are fortunate enough to be able to grow some produce on our property and that also helps. The soil is perfect for that!
