My husband feeds outdoors birds when we are in Jersey. He just scatters seeds and peanuts on the ground once or twice daily. We get squirrels, too, but they've not caused any problem. We get lots of pigeons, at least some of which probably belong to a guy several blocks away. We don't try to discriminate among them. Pigeons are very smart birds. Lots of songbirds come.
Anyway, the house is near NYC and we are in a heat wave.
So he puts out a pan of water, an old cat litter pan. A squirrel just takes one look at him and then plunges into the pan, throwing caution to the wind. Ha - wish I had seen that.

That's pretty cute. Poor thing must have been hot! I have several birdbaths around my yard, and I haven't seen that happen yet, although I've seen the squirrels drinking from them.
They're both adorable. I think we'll only do the water thing until the hot spell breaks. It's really about alleviating suffering in high 90 degree weather for anyone. Thank you, they're really beautiful.

There is a water source for them, but it's about 2 or 3 blocks away. The birds can get to it, but I think it would take a lot more effort for the squirrels.

If they are "really beautiful," then get them then. Birds and squirrels need water in the spring and fall and winter too, you know.

We DO have a water source several blocks away. I think the birds fly there for a little drink and splash. I don't think squirrels travel so far from home, though.
Be careful about how you feed your birds. I ended up attracting a couple of rats recently. I already killed one (a rat) with some rat poison that was in a covered bait trap.

Ha ha...there are rat lovers on this bird forum and they would love to attract some rats.
