So the new US News and World Report rankings were released today, and the UAB School of Medicine jumped up to #10 in the country in primary care (from #23 last year). For research, it is #30 (still very good and among the best in the Southeast). They also have highly ranked graduate programs in Nursing, Health Services, and Biological Sciences.

Congrats to UAB. The growth of UAB over the next 10 years will really change this city. They are moving towards putting student housing near the Railroad Park, along with an on-campus football stadium. If the city can find a way to locate the new Baron's stadium nearby, this area will see huge growth. Hang on to your hats everyone.

Birminghamians always complain how their city is ignored by the state like some red-headed step-child, yet UAB is the most significant development in the state in the past 100 years. Unlike a car plant and a steel plant, this is a development that grows and grows and grows. It was given to Birmingham without a second thought.

True, but when it comes to the politicians in Montgomery, Birmingham might as well not exist.

If you ever spent any amount of time in Montgomery during the legislative session, you would better understand where im coming from. Issues that concern Birmingham and Jefferson County are almost always put on the back burner.

Are we thankful for UAB?, of course. Its the largest employer in the state, and its a huge piece of this metro and the state's economy. But seems like to me the state is not trying to help recruit other industries to Birmingham.

Research is where the money is. So, in order for them to improve more, they're going to have to continue to improve the overall university and recruit some professors.

The 10 year strategic plan for UAB includes adding close to 1000 faculty. I would say that counts as solid growth, if they can do it.

I'd like to see UAB start accepting more medical students. I think this is less of an issue for public schools than private (especially since you can go to med school at UAB for free if you're willing to work in a rural area after graduation), but one of the easiest ways to reduce medical costs would be to increse the number of doctors and let them graduate without the equivalent of a mansion's mortgage in debt.
