Since they're doubling up on some markets, it would be a long shot for Birmingham.

Yeah. IKEA seems to have more of a model where they are a destination rather than a place where people spin by to pick up a lamp.

With IKEA less than two hours away from Birmingham, it's hard to make the case for a location. While Birmingham's 150-mile radius population is actually a couple of million larger than that of Nashville's (10.5 million vs 8.6 million), Birmingham would essentially cannibalize IKEA's customer base for the Atlanta store.

But Memphis is a town that needs a fix--and fast. I'm not surprised that location isn't doing well. Atlanta is surrounded by higher HHI communities within a two-hour radius. Atlanta has 17 million and change with a 10% ten-year growth rate. Memphis has 4.7 million with a -1.9% ten year growth rate.

The locations of the new stores hasn’t been announced but USA Today reported the stores will be launched in cities where the company already has a presence, as well as new markets. A spokesperson told CNN the company intends to build up its presence on the east and west coasts, as well as in the southern part of the country.
If all eight were new southern markets, I might allow myself to get a little intrigued. This statement is just ambiguous enough for them to be practically anywhere and not here.

This didn't take long for Adios. Jose is a close friend of mines for over 10 years now.

So, it doesn't matter to most of you, but it looks like Nick Johnson will be making a video about Birmingham, and it looks like he found it a lot better than he was expecting. He does tend to showcase poverty and issues in places, but he's also pretty decent at acknowledging things going well.

That's cool. I've watched a few of his videos. He seems to actually be balanced rather than that miserable hack, World According To Briggs.
