Probably true. I know that when I mention Birmingham to my mostly liberal and even some moderate friends, that's the first thing they mention about Alabama and declare that they are not interested in supporting tourism in a state which isn't considerate of women's rights.

MOD NOTE: The posts concerning the effects of the recent Alabama law concerning abortion on business migration are only marginally on-topic for the thread. They will be allowed to remain, to recognize that it is an issue, but further posts on that subject will be deleted as off-topic, or if incendiary, as trolling.

MANY factors influence a business decision to move a corporate location. The overall theme of the thread is "cool," exciting, and new development. Please keep it on-topic. Thanks.

Understood! Apologies for my digression, but as a new fan of BHam, and encouraging others to visit, that is what I'm running up against.

My story is that Birmingham was NOOOOOOwhere on my personal radar when my son decided to go to UAB and now, even after only spending 4 days there, I am a booster from afar! Very excited for you all. As a Miamian who pays attention to urban planning throughout the globe, I hope that the developers/building & zoning who transform BHam are much more community-minded than our local hit-and-run types. Will be back in October to enjoy your progress.

Encouraging to hear those words. Hoping you all have a great time when you're back in October.

Some positive news about job growth in the Birmingham metro. The BBA reports that the Birmingham region has now matched and surpassed the largest number jobs that existed before the last recession. That number was 543,000 jobs in 2007.

http://www.al.com/business/2019/07/b...recession.html

In April the number of jobs in the region reached 545,900, an increase of 2.4% over last year. This growth ranked Birmingham #3 among 14 peer metros (behind Nashville (3.9%), Charlotte (3.1%) and tied with Huntsville (2.4%)).

Although the naysayers will bemoan the fact that it took us 12 years to get back to the best pre-recession job levels, this is really good news. It means that the economic revival and city renaissance going on here is real, and sustainable at least at a moderate pace. And hey, it's way better than continuing job losses and job growth stagnation.

The future looks good here!

The encouraging aspect of it is that growth has been broad-based. The problem with Birmingham's economic growth over our history is that it has been very dependent upon single industries, whether it has been steel, heavy manufacturing, or banking. So during the 30s, the late 70s, and 2008, the city took it on the veritable chin.
