not a bad name, in my opinion:

Birmingham Squadron chosen as name of new G-League team

"There are ties both to the team’s parent club and Birmingham’s history. Squadron is used to describe a group of pelicans, while the word also has longstanding use in military aviation."

I'm not familiar with G league. Is it in anyway analagous to minor league baseball, and if so, would it be A, AA, AAA, or what?

BTW - the name "Squadron" is terribly offensive since it portrays military in a positive light, and they might even have the US flag somewhere and play the National Anthem. (Just kidding - 21 years as a Navy Reserve engineer here).

The G League is the NBA's "official minor league basketball organization", so in that sense it is similar to minor league baseball. However, as you know, minor league baseball has multiple tiers within it, with each MLB team having A, AA and AAA farm teams to pull from. As I understand it, each NBA team has just one G League team, so I suppose it's most similar to AAA baseball in that it's the top (and in this case only) tier.

I believe the league is actually a direct descendant from (and expansion of) the early NBDL teams (I think the Huntsville Flight were one of 8 original teams). That league lasted from 2001-2005. In 2005, the NBA commissioner announced the NBA would develop a true minor league farm system, which led to the rapid expansion and relocation of some of those original teams to the 30-team league today.

Okay, Squad Up. I'm in. Where can I get my gear?

It's wild we have Tad Snider to thank for snatching this away from Mobile and we end up having the nicest venue in the league. Hopefully it will be an easy stepping stone to an NBA team.

But as much as I'm glad this team is coming, I don't understand the supposed link to Birmingham's history. We don't have a nearby airbase and we certainly don't have pelicans.

"Pelicans" is the name of the New Orleans NBA team, for which the Squadron will be the minor league team.

Right. I get that. It's the "ties...[to] Birmingham’s history." that I don't understand.
