Well, it already has according to the Federal government. Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, along with the other surrounding counties, have merged into a single MSA. Really, Gadsden, Anniston, Jasper, Cullman, and Clanton are really beginning to be considered that way, too. Birmingham is stealthily becoming a rather large city without people even realizing it.

It will merge after the Spaceport is completed.

Sorry, I just can't respond to this guy without sarcasm.

Is there a 1,000,000 home subdivision being built in Tarrant? Will Birmingham absorb the entire state of Mississippi into its metro area? Have the Calera diamond mines made everyone there millionaires? Will evil engineers turn Vulcan into a massive humanoid robot that will attack the city? Will the Village Creek wastewater treatment facility be upgraded to function as a cold fusion power plant? Is the scrolling marquee on top of 2 North 20th sending subliminal messages to kewon3rd to convince him to lure unsuspecting victims to East Lake, where they're dismembered and fed to the mutant turtles? Does it really only take three licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? Does UAB really stand for "the University that Ate Birmingham"? Will Larry Langford build a dome over the entire downtown area, then raise taxes to such a ridiculous level that all the businesses leave, so that the dome just becomes a giant auxiliary spacecraft hangar for the Bessemer Intergalactic Spaceport?

No, I don't think I'll let the spaceport thing go, at least for now.

I once heard a saying about Birmingham being a city getting bigger but without sophistication.

Really? I've noticed a quantum leap in my time here. You can now choose any number of great places to eat, great performances to watch, etc. etc.

Will it or will it not: that is the ultimate question. The answer shall be revealed in 2010 (with the US Census report). I predict no massive climate-controlled geodesic domes, rampaging cast iron statues in the likeness of mythological figures, or intergalactic visitors taxiing on the makeshift runway that is US11.
