Usually fiction wheni'm reading on my own time. I'm in college so I read more than my fair share of non-fiction every day. On my own time I like to read something more interesting and imaginative. I have to fight myself to stay awake when doing my reading assignments. The only non-fiction I will read regularly is autobiographies. I do love those.
I tend to read mostly non-fiction, primarily because I love to learn new things. I am also a history buff, and although I know you can learn a lot of history from fiction books, I just prefer to learn about the real thing.
I've been trying to read more fiction lately, though, especially the classics, which I've woefully under read.
Usually fiction because I find them easier to read. Other worlds and places are more interesting than modern day life, IMO. When I do read non-fiction it's usually something involving the area I live in or something outdoorsy (or both).
I find some fiction leads into nonfiction. An historical fiction might spark an interest in the actual period, or a character, and I'll go through whole works of nonfiction after reading a novel. I also became very interested in Tom Brokaw's works, and read several he published -- one on my grandparents' and parents' generations, and then one on the 1960s, which was neat for me in that it was like having an older brother explain things for me.
Some of the scariest works I've ever read were actually nonfiction -- try sleeping after reading about Manson's creepy-crawling in Vincent Bugliosi's Helter Skelter, or decide for yourself the guilt or innocence of some serial killer after reading a nonfiction account. It's also interesting to read a work and see how a writer's mind works, where the story came from, itself.
I like fiction so I can disapear and enjoy a good well writen story. My life sucks so I really don't want to read about real people and "how they made it".
One of my good friends reads mostly non fiction and I think she does it because she thinks she should read the stuff...mostly crap. Then she'll read something I recommend and she's like wow that was great.

Who says they always "make it"? I like to read non-fiction about European Royalty (mostly historical, not really current) because typically, they're far more effed up than I am! Check out Michael Farquhar: Michael Farquhar
I like both. My favorites tend to be historical fiction, and non-fiction, but I love a good sci-fi / fantasy as well.
