I read that book about 20 years ago. Very compelling and thought-provoking. Although we don't live in world like that portrayed in 1984, the book's themes and concepts do exist in the real world. I can only imagine what North Korea must be like...
I thought it was a good book when I read it all those years ago. read parts of it again a couple years ago, when my oldest son had to read it for school. When you think about how things are now, with the technological capabilities and the whole big brother thing, makes you wonder.
Orwell hated socialism, he wrote of the inequities of society but failed to see the good in any government. The entire book is a rant on what he viewed as a dangerous intrusion of government into our private lives, not so far fetched considering the reality of electronic eavesdropping we see today.
I read 1984 and Animal Farm in the last year. Although I'm not sure that I "liked" either of them, I do enjoy distopias! If you liked it, you may also like Farenheit 451 (is that right?)... both books have allusions to the present... the monitoring, screens, made-up "news, full wall screens, "ear buds".
One of the things I think we should be contemplating in the present is the question of who will be the next Orwell, who will write of our future as anathema? Jeremy Rifkin wrote his best stuff trying to show us his view of the future America as a place where most people are stunned by the wholesale taking over of mechanized workers. In his book, The End Of Work, he states the obvious, that we need to move beyond the notion of mass employment in the production of goods and services.
