What high school did you go to that didn't have certain books as required reading? Every single person I know who attended high school had to read certain books, with some variations depending on school district. This particular book was very popular when I was in high school, since it actually was 1984 for half of my freshman and sophomore years.
Don't forget "Brave New World" if you are into this genre, LOL!
Have you heard about the new 4-D movie experience in Los Angeles? I heard that the seats rock, roll, smells come out of the walls, it rains on you. The first thing I thought of was we have "feelies" now like in A Brave New World.
Has to be one of the greatest satiric novels in the English language. As you read remember 'Big Brother' is watching you too...;-)...what are 'brothers' for anyway????
Orwell was pretty prescient with his view of the post-war world...it's the Anglos vs the Eurasians lined up in opposition. At the time though the Islamic world was relatively quiet.
But in seeing its rise through extremist elements it would certainly have to fit in with his perception that movements do have a tendency to hunt for power, go mad for it and destroy
for it.
Read it when I was 12 after seeing the Edmond O'Brien movie. Didn't quite understand all of it then, but enough to like it. I've re-read it since, but need to take a current look at it.
Also liked "Animal Farm" and "Brave New World", but just couldn't get into the "hip malchik" lingo of "A Clockwork Orange".
