Should I get a job before moving to Boston? (College Grad) (Amherst: look for a job, YMCA)

I will be graduating college in May with a B.S. in Sports Management. My question is should I look for a job in the Boston area prior to moving or should I be able to move to the area then get a part time job to hold me over until I land a job in my field. I am looking to work at a college/school but will settle for just about any job related in my field once I find one. And since the area has so many colleges and schools I would expect that over time I should be able to get a job. Any help would be great, Thanks.

I would defiantly start looking now. Mostly because...

1) by the time may hits a fair amount of seasonal work is already locked in

2) you'd be competing with everyone else that also graduated here

I wouldn't assume just because we have a fair amount of schools that it means we are hiring.I'd hate to break it to you but cuts in government are happening all over the place this year because the recovery act money was misused and propped up spending.

I'd recommend indeed.com as it can search pretty deep. I'd look at non profits as well..maybe some gyms.. ymca's come to mind.

Are you aware how expensive Boston is? A part time job will never keep you afloat here unless you have a TON of savings. Get a job first, then move.

The unemployment rate in MA is 8.2%. Unless there is some shortage of people with sports management backgrounds, moving here without a job would be risky...

Ditto a hundred times. Plus Boston is lousy with college grads... lots of them from Harvard and MIT. That's who you'll be competing with. You can't throw a rock without hitting someone with a Harvard degree of some sort - grad or undergrad. Not to mention Boston U, Boston College, U Mass Amherst, Tufts and Emerson. Did I mention there are about a dozen more schools around there? Don't do it to yourself. Plan it out first.

In this economy, you should get a job before moving anywhere. Pine Street Inn is nice, I guess, but I'm not sure you'd like it
