Where would you recommend I go to find a decent studio apartment for under $1100/month? Are there specific areas in Boston where such apartments are more plentiful? I'm hoping to be around the Brighton area but I'm open to other areas as well as long as they're near BU. And is it too much to hope for that studio apartments under $1100 can be located in places with amenities like an on-site laundry room or are the studios in this city mostly converted from old multi-bedroom apartments and old basements?

Take a look at the Boston Craigslist. I think you're going to have a tough time - better bet is to do the roommate thing (which means having your own bedroom & sharing the rest of the apt.)

I recommend finding online on Craigslist.com or RentSuggest.com Apartments in Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Find apartment online - Home
Apartmentslist.com
There are many websites before going to agency, and Boston apartment rental market is big, so check online and then call the rental agents.
