I went to college in Boston, but haven't lived there in some time (about 10 years). I am living in KC, have a decent house on about a half acre of land. I have a well paying job for this area, and I am a CPA. If I were to just decide to up and move to Boston, how much would I need to make to live in the Back Bay area? Could a CPA with no other connections to Boston other than having gone to school there a decade ago be able to make it there?

Not hard and fast, but I would say upwards of 65K might get you in the neighborhood, but to live alone comfortably you would need more. (Maybe a little less if you find a deal or roommates.) Taxes and food cost are high. And you probably would not be living the same lifestyle that you are living in KC.

You might want to get in touch with your school's alumni network..

it totally depends on your expectations for living conditions... I mean, my wife rented an apartment in Backbay for 1900 a month with a roommate. It was a good sized 2 bedroom, but was a complete and utter dump. That said, the location was great, and they both traveled for work a lot so to them, it was the perfect situation. This of course was circa 2008, so I'm sure rents have gone up because of the housing markets impact on the rental demand.

So for her, with a roommate, her rent expense with heat included was only 900 a month... That said, her next door neighbor (well, reallyi a few buildings down) who's apartment was twice the size, and gorgeous - was 3800 a month, which he shared with his fiance.

Also consider parking expenses if you bring a car, and what is and isn't included in yoru rent. This will make a big impact on what the rent will really be if you include all the addons. Dont' forget laundry...
