Hi,

I am moving to Boston for a new job, and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for a convenient neighborhood to live without a car. Basic info on what I'm looking for:

Job is in Cambridge near MIT and the red line, so would like something near the subways for the work commute. The closer to work the better, but am open to living farther out. Close to any subway would also work, but near the red line would be the most convenient.

Looking for apartment <$1500/month for comfortable studio or one bedroom, not shared.

Safe area with typical basic conveniences nearby: grocery, stores, post office, restaurants, etc.

That's really my only criteria.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Studio around central square should be doable. Most of the urban area is walkable.

Also maybe Porter Sq., though I'm not sure how the rents run there. Maybe Davis Sq. in Somerville. I don't know how the rents run there, but have a sneaking suspicion that they may be higher. May be worth checking into at least.

Unfortunately, you want exactly what lots of other people want. Get a roommate like many people do, or accept a commute from somewhere like Ayer, MA on the commuter line. It's easily an hour commute each way, but will meet your needs of a <$1500 safe unit.

I’d look in Davis square in Somerville, porter square Cambridge or central square Cambridge first. Other places would be union square area in Somerville, Allston or Brighton

I'm surprised to hear this but, yeah, they are out there.
