I suppose anything is possible. Although I've parked in Newton many times, so far I have never been there for very long. So if the meter expired, there was never a very long period of time between it expiring and my return to the car, so there was a very small window of time for someone to steal it. They could have, though. But I fail to see the fun in that.

I'm still waiting to see what happens. I suspect they'll draw it out long enough to increase the fine yet again and tell me they won't change it.

Another possibility is that they slid the ticket under your passenger wiper, right next to the curb. That happened to me in Cambridge and I didn't even realize I had been ticketed until a full day later when I was approaching the car from a different angle. Perhaps you didn't see it right away and it blew off as you were drag racing later that evening?

A good clerk magistrate will, knowing well that it's nothing more than taxation. A cop can easily run your plate numbers and see that your registration is valid. I've been stopped twice for this and both times I was told to apply a sticker ASAP under the premise that "other cops might not be so forgiving". These are the officers who truly understand the phrase "serve and protect".

A cop can run the plate but a parking enforcement officer cannot. The OP was ticketed by the latter.

I realize that this particular post is from 2012, but I just wanted to add one thing to the bolded. It's correct in the sense that the city- not the registry- issues tickets and you either pay or fight them at city hall. However, if you "forget" to pay or you choose not to pay your ticket, it will affect you at the registry. You won't be able to register your car or renew your license at the registry until all outstanding tickets and late fees are paid off. In short, unpaid municipal tickets do affect you at the state registry although they don't impact your insurance premium.
