And the better part of Southie (east side) isn't really walkable to the subway...Savin Hill is also a good spot and near the T. Also in Dot is Jones Hill, which started on the upswing in the late 90's though I think it might have slipped back a little bit to where closer to where it was in the hayday of Uphams Corner in the 80's-90's. It might be working checking out though.
Funny, I was going to write something similar. I lived in South Boston for 4 years, and in Dorchester for 3.

I still own a condo that I rent in Southie on Dorchester St, about a 7 minute walk to Andrew Square. I have *never* parked more than one block away, and though snowy winters can be tough, there's alternatives for parking (I parked a few T-stops away during a big storm, and then took the T to get my car...it saved a lot of headaches). I would not let South Boston scare you too much with parking.

Also, note that in Brookline there is NO OVERNIGHT PARKING on the street, and very few places provide parking spaces. My year in Brookline was a nightmare with my car--I had to move it to an overnight spot I had to rent, and even then I'd get ticketed and towed. Awful.

I love the Dorchester suggestions--in my opinion, anything east of Dorchester Ave is great. Right on the highway, access to public transportation, and really urban neighborhoody feel.

Good luck!
