Hi! I moved to the greater Boston area recently (I'm between Boston & Providence) from north of New York City. I was shocked to find that the commuter rail into Boston is more expensive than into New York! Yikes! I'm not working in Boston, so I don't need to get there every day, but I'm sure I'll want to go in every once in a while with visitors and to check out restaurants.

The commuter train is out because of the price, and I've heard driving all the way into Boston is terrible, and the parking is expensive. So... After researching, it seems like I might try driving into the Forest Hills area, parking, and taking the T in the rest of the way. Does that sound like a good plan? Do I avoid any of the traffic problem by getting off at Forest Hills, or is the majority of the problem on 95, which I would have to take anyway? Anyone have experience with finding parking in that area at off-hours? (I'd probably be going for day-trips on Saturdays or Sundays, or just for an evening). Is it a safe area? Thanks for your help!

Where do you live? If its close enough you can take the bus to Forest Hills.

There is a parking lot at Forest Hills. It's not very big, but usually doesn't fill up on weekends or other off hours. The cost is $6, so it might not actually save you any money over commuter rail when you add it all up. Street parking around there can be found, but you'll need some luck.

No, I don't live close enough to take the bus. I'm closer to Providence. And $6 to park will definitely save money. It's only $2 less to park at the commuter rail, and on top of that it cost $18.50 round trip to take the train! Good to know there's parking on the weekends. I'll try that next time I want to go. I just wanted to make sure I didn't drive all the way up there just to find I can't park. Thanks!
