I am being asked to apply for a job in Boston (Somerville) by my friend that used to work at the company and by a current worker at the company, and while I do want to apply, I always think ahead. I dont know where I would live. I live in southcoast Ma right now. If I got the job in Boston I'd have to move to Boston and I do NOT want roommates. I hate living with other people. I need to live alone. If I dont live in Boston though, I'd have to live in small towns that have the commuter rail, but that also means I'd be taking the bus a lot and walking a lot and this job ends late at night (10pm). Before I apply for jobs I think about all these factors. Is it possible at all to live near Somerville in an affordable apartment by myself, or outside Boston where I dont have to depend on buses so much? Since the job does end at night. If none of this is possible I will not apply. Thanks for your help.

Come on now, don't be anti social. Introvert is not the same thing. It'd be a shame to deny yourself career advances because you're too stubborn to change anything about yourself.

The key question is what is your budget/what do you consider "affordable?"

Have you considered that you could have roommates but have your own room? If you have a computer and tv in your room, you wouldn't necessarily be with the roommates that much. I've had situations where I hardly saw roommates because they weren't there very much when I was there.

No dude, bs. I am as introverted as they come. I just understand that other people exist and aren't out to inconvenience me with their presence.

And no, you can't afford it. Don't bother. There that's your answer. And it's true.

Malden is near Somerville and likely one of the cheapest places to rent nearby.
.
Can you afford $1,300 monthly for a basic studio there, just seen on Craigslist?

You can probably find a studio or 1 BR in Revere, within walking distance of the Blue Line, for $800-900.

You might not be able to see his posts, but he is giving good advice.

What you are looking for does not exist at that budget. As was stated by you or others, your options are don't take the job, get roommates, or live somewhere incredibly inconvenient and rely on off hour transit trips with multiple mode changes.

Just to echo what others have said, it isn't going to happen with that budget. Just search Craigslist and everything under $900 is either for a roommate situation, a probable scam, or in places like Fitchburg.

These are probably rare near Boston, but can you find a ROOM to rent that is treated as a separate rental unit by the owner? That is, you do have to share use of a kitchenette and bathroom, but the lease for your room and phone bills are separate from whoever rents the other room? Landlord includes shared utilities as part of each room lease.

IF you really want to work in the Boston area, roommates are pretty much the alternative to spending megabucks on rent. It's been like that for many, many years and must be far worse these days.

You are probably better off searching for a different metro area.
