I was thinking the mid/late 80s. But probably the same thing.
One of my high school GFs lived in Mission Hill (we met working in Harvard Square) and even that was pretty sketchy in the late 80s. Now, well, doesn't look like the same place at all. I doubt this place has gentrified anything like that.
No it's nothing like Mission Hill. Entirely different dynamic there.

People can anecdote anything they want. And personal perception (aka a young woman's sense of safety compared to an adult guy's) is going to vary greatly.

I get it. But the OP is asking about 2019. And that is still one of the more undesirable locations of Boston, for reasons mentioned above.
