I don't have any recent experience with too many other cities, but I can't say I am too surprised. It's a burgeoning metropolis relying on a one-horse-town infrastructure. Something's gotta give...

It's really bad.

Seattle's 405 was painful. 280/101 was pretty brutal in the Bay Area. And 90 in Chicago might be the worst of all highways I've seen (with the exception of LA's 405/605/110).. But I'm not sure any of these cities are universally as bad as Boston has gotten. 3 South, 3 North, 93 South, 95 North and South, Route 9. Yuck.

One thing about Boston is, how much worse it's gotten in just a few years. Every time I go back to visit, it's like WOW...

Drivers are 10X worse now too. Uber, need I say more.

Our elected leaders truly have their heads stuck in the sand.

I walk over the pike in Brighton every day coming home from work, usually around 5:30. Brake lights as far as the eye can see. It looks absolutely miserable. This is a serious problem. I don't think the city really cares.

Why would they? It's not Boston residents that are in those cars and the city is a long long way from flipping to being an undesirable place to locate for the high end jobs.

The suburbs (leeches) that gets the benefits of those commuters need to step up.

Just anecdotally, the majority of people I know also own cars and my street is filled with cars at night now. A few years ago, there was plenty of space available. I suspect that car ownership in the city is at an all time high. Not sure how I could confirm that.

You're not making any sense at all, and/or have little understanding how the metro functions on a regional level. Key word "regional" planning is what is lacking and would have put a damper on this situation. Boston, surrounding cities, and smaller suburban towns look after their own interests which are all vastly different from one another. NOBODY has seriously addressed the interests of the REGION, that is the whole problem here.

Probably true, at the same time it seems more people are forgoing their cars. Just more people crammed into the same amount of space.

True, but the point is that these aren't the people that you see heading out of town on 93, 1, or 90 at 5:30 every night. I own a car (a SUV that's probably larger than I need), and it's parked comfortably on my street or in my driveway most of the week. I drive it on weeknights and to head out of town on weekends. I'm not sitting in that traffic every day.

We all know this, but we need drastically improved transit and we need better access to transit for people in the burbs. It's that simple. Traffic will never not be bad. We don't have the room to increase highway capacity, and most evidence points to added highway capacity just generating more highway traffic. At least in Boston we have the option of providing people viable alternatives. Traffic will always be bad. People will always choose driving. But at least we can ensure that there are options for those that don't want to.
