I have been offered a job in Kendall Square (Athenaeum St.) and I am agonizing whether it's worth moving to Boston for it (I am currently in a suburban/semi-rural part of Hudson Valley). What are the best places to live for a reasonable commute (under 45 minutes one way on most days) by either car or public transportation, if looking for 2-bedroom within $3000/month in a quiet and safe area?

Thanks! Happy holidays!

Why not just live right there in Kendall Square?

OK, should have looked in the general MA forum...

I think my bigger issue is not even renting, there are enough options, but trying to figure out if it will be feasible for me to buy after one year if I decide I don't hate Boston and wouldn't mind living there. On a budget of $500-550K a decent townhouse within an hour of Kendall Square seems like a tall order... Meaning, garage, central A/C, washer/dryer in unit and 900+ square feet with bedrooms that fit more than a twin bed + a bedstand.

Unfortunately, you want what nearly everyone else wants. Reasonable commutes to Kendall and Seaport are especially in demand. If moving into the city, I suggest embracing it fully. Rent somewhere very close like Union Square, East Cambridge, Inman Square, or Cambridgeport. You'll definitely have to compromise space wise, but will have time to enjoy all the new amenities.

Kendall Square is the best place to live if you’re working in Kendall Square.

Yes, there is a current thread with this exact question in the MA section of the forum, although the additional information here changes the question. The real question is whether OP can get a townhouse for $550K within a reasonable commute of Kendall Square. That's a tougher question. You could get a condo that would fit your space considerations, but a townhouse will be tougher. If you really want the house feel, with a yard, you might be able to find something in Burlington -- there are some older SFHs on the smaller end available, which could be preferable to a townhouse, depending on what is most important to you.

The rent is too high, and its not worth it. Also Kendall Square is a bit of a dump to live in.

How is Kendall Sq a dump to live in? 20 years ago it was a bit of a wasteland as far as amenities, but that's long gone. Tons of restaurants and other amenities now. Its become a place people actually travel too after work.
