I'm planning a move to the Boston area from Alabama. I want a townhouse, or a house with a low-maintenance yard. I definitely want something old, and I'd love to find something in a predominantly gay neighborhood. I'm looking to spend no more than $600,000. Any suggestions where should look? I'm having to do all of my research online for now since I don't exactly have time to make a long trip to house-hunt, and I definitely don't want to talk to a realtor yet. I'd love to know what neighborhoods to look in and if there are any particularly useful websites that would help me, I'd love to know about them as well.

Thanks!

I'm not sure about particular neighborhoods, but MA will be a definite improvement over the south in terms of gay-friendliness. You might want ot look at Brookline for a busy city feel without really living in Boston Proper. Back Bay is the nice nice area, might be more expensive than you are looking for. I think you'll find most of the Boston area very tolerant and accepting of many lifestyles- especially coming from Alabama!

You might be surprised about some parts of the south. I've lived in other parts of Alabama, as well as TN and GA. Where I live in AL is not representative of the south as a whole. It's actually quite gay-friendly.

I'm really wanting to stay in the city. I've lived in the 'burbs and they're not for me. Finding an "accepting" area isn't really what I'm looking for so much as I want to live in an area that is comprised mosly of "family".

Oh, for some reason I thought you wanted to be outside the city. Check out the South End. That's what you're looking for.

The South End is still very gay, although its very gentrified now (more and more men walking dogs being replaced by hetero couples pushing strollers) and the rent/real estate market is through the roof. Lots of the gays are now moving to Dorchester or Fort Hill (neither are as glamorous, but the South End certainly wasn't when the gays started moving in years ago and fixing things up). Jamaica Plain has a large lesbian community, and you'll find a good number of gay people in Fenway too.

Many gay-owned and gay-friendly real estate companies and realtors in Boston... do a Google search and you'll have no issues.

In that price range, I would say South End is the most obvious choice, followed closely by Jamaica Plain. You may also consider Cambridge.

DEFINITELY South End, Jamaica Plain or parts of Dorchester ( Jones Hill, Savin Hill areas). South End is notorious for being very gay area and the gay parade is there every year. Jamaica Plain and Dorchester are more residential type of neighborhoods that look completely different from South End (South End is full of brownstones, whereas JP and Dot have traditional Victorian homes, etc)but are very diverse in culture. The price range would be a LOT cheaper for you too and you could still get a really nice place.

Wasn't there a hate crime against a gay guy in Savin Hill?

Does Fort Hill still have gang problems, or are the gang problems just in the non-gentrified parts of Roxbury?
