Wokeism is about reducing everything to the lowest possible common denominator in the name of equality and destroying anything that cannot be reduced. Jaquan da Bromley Gunna and Laquan da Lenox Slinga can't pass their classes? Make their classes easier so they can be passed and cancel all other classes because others being able to attend better classes is unequal and unfair! Kwame from Nairobi, Mohammed from Beirut, Vineet from Bengaluru and Chen from Guangzhou whose parents are sweeping floors and driving for uber don't get to go to college because of that? Too bad, so sad, sieg social, heil justice, equality uber alles!

Many people who have their kids in bps are likely immigrants who can here for a better life. They are probably just happy to be here and aren't sitting at home crying because their kid wasn't in that advanced class or going to an exam school.

Quite the opposite, immigrants want their kids to succeed but don't have the money for private school, destroying the last few good schools in the BPS system also destroys the futures of all those kids. But hey, small price to pay for equality and social justice, can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs!

I guess it's interesting to me that they're paying that much attention to their kids education to be angry about it. I suppose if the kids are failing that might get their attention but so many parents aren't even interested in what their kids are doing in school these days. Particularly in poorer communities.

The views of immigrants depends a great deal on which immigrants you are referring to. Many immigrants (I would even venture to say most) aren't interested in the goals of the woke crowd. I believe some are used as props and pawns toward that end but, by and large, most immigrants don't subscribe to a hard leftist agenda. Many of them have already experienced the results of where that type of thinking winds up bringing some societies. That said, I wouldn't say most subscribe to what is often described as a traditional US conservative viewpoint, either.

By these standards, then the GOP is purely about white nationalism, authoritarianism, Qanon, and Trumpism. American Christianity is purely about prosperity gospel, grifting, cancel culture, and creating a monotheistic state.

You can identify the most toxic elements of any movement or group and have them be *the* representative, but doing so rights off the moderate voices which contribute legitimate arguments. People dismiss the ‘woke’ scene because toxic zealots have co-opted the identity (see the insistence ‘CIS’ be a mainstream term), but it’s foundation was an argument for racial equality in a society which was anything.

seems like terrible response to the situation. no one goes to BPS because they're rich or privledged. they could have more reasonable steps than just cutting off the program

That's all nice and dandy but rightie qanon nutjobs are mostly in the basement and those that have slithered into the upper echelons are shunned by most non-nutjob members of the GOP while their leftie equivalents are seen as the second coming of joshua jehovawitz by everyone with D next to their name. And in this particular case the said nutjobs are burning BPS to the ground while a bunch of idiots are standing around clapping and patting each other on the back for being so woke.

At its core it’s about destroying meritocracy. To destroy the system where hard work, ingenuity and long term planning are rewarded and replace it with a system where some central body decides who gets the resources. A system where arbitrary things like skin color are taken heavily into account. A recipe for disaster, tribal politics that’s begging for 90s style Yugoslavian conflict.

As shrewsburried put it, its annoying that these interesting and complex issues get turned into straw man talking points for outrage on one side or another.

The critique from the right has merit the individual effort and excellence matters. The perspective from the left also has merit that the disparity in outcomes should prompt reexamination of the process generating such disparate outcomes. The United States has a long history of creating de-facto segregation well past the end of the slavery. Separate but equal, voting eligibility tests, jim crow laws, and white flight into suburbs as some prominent examples.
